JPMorgan Says It Was Tricked Into Keeping Lehman's `Goat Poo' Collateral

"Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. tricked JPMorgan Chase & Co. into holding onto collateral that the bankrupt investment firm internally described as “goat poo.”

JPMorgan was stuck with Lehman’s worst securities backing $25 billion of loans as Lehman was sold to Barclays Plc in September 2008, JPMorgan said in a court filing yesterday. Lehman described the collateral as “toxic crap” and “goat poo” to be scattered “in other people’s backyards,” JPMorgan said."

Odd Behavior from 'Best Performing' Hedge Fund Manager 2010?

STAMFORD -- Former trader Jeffrey Kong claims his old boss Don Brownstein, founder of hedge fund Structured Portfolio Management, sometimes adopted the managerial style of movie land gangster complete with baseball bat.
Brownstein's $2 billion Stamford-based SPM LLC. is locked in a legal battle with Kong, each seeking to "recover" millions of dollars from the other claiming breach of contract. The two had worked together for 10 years until Kong resigned in May of 2010 and then took a job with a rival fund. And this week, Kong asked the court to stop SPM from distributing, profits, bonuses and equity distributions. Kong's counterclaim in the fight also became public, revealing some of his allegations against his former boss, a highly regarded former philosophy professor.
"Brownstein's management style was, at times questionable," Kong said in a court filing. "For example, as in the famous scene from the movie "The Untouchables," Brownstein would often walk around the crowded conference room table while slapping the palm of his hand with a baseball bat, stopping behind me while stating, `I'll kill you if you leave. The only way you can leave this firm is in a body bag.'"

China Payment System Closed - Will WTO Do Anything?

"A U.S. case is pending asking the World Trade Organization to look into trade barriers that discriminate against U.S. credit and debit card companies that want to participate in China's electronic payments market. On Friday, U.S. trade officials requested that the WTO establish a dispute settlement panel to handle the case after consultation with the organization failed to resolve the dispute.

"Opening up China's market, as China committed to do over four years ago, would create American jobs for the U.S. suppliers of electronic payment services, and a more efficient payment card system in China would be beneficial for both merchants and consumers," U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in a statement Friday."

"John C. Whitehead isn’t celebrating the 219-year-old New York Stock Exchange’s plan to be acquired by Germany’s 18-year-old Deutsche Boerse AG.

“I think it’s a terrible idea and I hope it can be stopped,” Whitehead, the 88-year-old former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., said in an interview yesterday. “It would be an insult to New York City, and New York State, and indeed to all America.”

The erstwhile U.S. deputy secretary of state, NYSE director and Lower Manhattan Development Corp. chairman said his experience gives him the credibility to speak out against the potential takeover."

Is Twitter’s Valuation a Sign of the Next Bubble?

"OK. Here’s a new one: Mass text messaging company Twitter is currently claiming a valuation of $8-$10 billion. Sure, the white hot Web 2.0 company has barely made any money (~45 million in 2010) and may become another Friendster. But there’s tons of cash sloshing around Silicon Valley and the herd is starting to feel the first pangs of fear they will miss out on investing in “the next big thing.”
That means fundamental business valuations are on the way out the door. In the place of sane rational analysis, you should expect to see hype, emotions, and ego. That’s a simple way of saying investors are more willing to slap an extra hundred or two hundred basis points onto M&A multiples.
Here are the first few snowballs in what’s starting to look like an inevitable deal avalanche:
Groupon: The mass coupon site sent shockwaves through the business world after rejecting a $6 billion offer from Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). The company clearly thinks it’s worth more and there’s still a window of opportunity to wait for a more insane valuation. Now that’s a clear sign there ain’t no economic depression.
Demand Media DMD: The world’s largest industrial content farming operation popped over 30% at their IPO ~2 weeks ago."

Facebook Insider Sales PROVES this is a BUBBLE

"Facebook Employee Sale Would Value It at $60 Billion, WSJ Says"

At these prices employees are just unloading the shares when they are sky high so the suckers buy them at this prices, nothing guarantees how facebook will get profitable in the next 5 years to justify this type of valuation. Myspace had its peak peak of 75.9 million users in December 2008 - and it is worth next to nothing now so News Corp can not even sell it....

"Facebook Inc. may allow employees to sell as much as $1 billion of shares in an offering that would place the company’s value at $60 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on its All Things Digital blog, citing unidentified people close to the situation.

The social-networking company wants to give employees a chance to sell shares because an initial public offering isn’t likely for at least a year, All Things Digital said."

China's Real Estate Bubble Continues to Expand

"Hiking rates a quarter point a pop reminds me of Greenspan's policy of hiking rates at a measured pace. US speculation in residential real estate went on for another three years, followed by another 18 months of commercial real estate speculation.

In theory, China has other options given the nature of its command economy. Then again practice is a different matter given China's expectation to grow 9-10% a year.

Currently it is taking credit growth 3-4 times GDP to achieve China's growth targets.

Something has to give. Can China grow 10% without huge investment-driven growth, without rampant credit expansion? What about speculation in the stock market?

$$ All levels from Junior to Expert Level

Note to Recruiters: Team expects to hire at least 6 developers in 2011, most in Q1.

Team wants to hire at all levels, junior, mid level and senior level. This team is developing the core trading platform for the firm which will cover all asset classes and this team is responsible for all aspects of the system from the low level infrastructure code to the data technology to the front end, but the bulk of the development which needs to be done is the server side development - the core business logic to the core systems. This is a team which only hires best of breed talent, whether junior or senior level candidate, must have excellent academic and/or professional accomplishments which make them stand out.

The bulk of the development will be done in Python but there will be some C++. They are happy to hire a pure Python developer, but some C++ is desirable and they will not hire a pure C++ developer. Financial background is not particularly critical to the job function. Candidates need to be able to show great fluency in Python. The "extras" they're really looking for though are some background with dependency graphs, python twisted, python numpy, python numeric. In general they would also like developer with experience developing large-scale, high performance systems as well as developers who have experience developing software solutions to work with very large data sets. The GUI will be developed in Python WX which is also a plus. This may show up in math people or compiler people or data mining people.

Will Las Vegas Casinos Now Demand Bailouts? Not very different from what Wall Street Banks Did, Right?

Bookies incurred more losses from Super Bowl XLV than they had in any single Super Bowl since 1993, according to the L.A. Times. And that means the public, and especially your average occasional bettor, came away with big winnings.

Whitney Whips Up Wall Street as Bear in Heels: Alice Schroeder

Meredith Whitney has done it again, turning Wall Street against her with a contrarian call, this time on municipal bonds.

The analyst’s prediction for “50 to 100 sizable defaults” of U.S. municipal bonds totaling “hundreds of billions of dollars” could become her Big Wrong Call. If so, it will knock Whitney from a pedestal, to the satisfaction of her many critics.

She has staked her credibility on this forecast, broadcast Dec. 20 in an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes.” Her summary of a 600-page report to clients prompted a National League of Cities analyst to say she possessed a “stunning lack of understanding.” Other critics called her prediction “ludicrous,” “irresponsible,” “damaging,” and “overreaching.”

Egypt Police Thuggery, Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt

`You Will Be Lynched,' Says Egyptian Policeman: First Person

"Having a policeman say he wanted to kill me wasn’t my most frightening moment yesterday in Cairo. That came when police and civilians smashed our car windows -- with the five of us inside it -- jumped up and down on the roof, spat on us, pulled my hair, beat my friends and dragged us into a police van."

Underground world hints at China's coming crisis

To understand how far ordinary Chinese have been priced out of their country's property market, you need to look not upwards at the Beijing's shimmering high-rise skyline, but down, far below the bustling streets where nearly 20m people live and work.

Hedge Funds Gird to Fight Proposals On Disclosure

Is this an excuse to prevent disclosure and monitor problems in the financial system or valid concern?

"Hedge funds are gearing up to take on proposed rules that would force them to turn over more data about their trading positions to the U.S. government.

Regulators will be required to keep the information they gather confidential, but some hedge funds are invoking a WikiLeaks scenario, saying they are concerned that too many hands will be on their proprietary data and the government won't be able to protect it."

Wall Street pay reaches record $135bn

**Pay could resurface as an issue at shareholder meetings this spring. The Dodd-Frank financial-overhaul law mandates that shareholders get a regular "say-on-pay" vote about corporate compensation plans.

This week, a group of about three dozen investment funds called for companies to support an annual advisory vote on pay, rather than a two- or three-year schedule. The frequency of the advisory vote also will come up at 2011 annual meetings, the shareholder group said.**

"In 2010, total compensation and benefits at publicly traded Wall Street banks and securities firms hit a record of $135bn, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal. The total is up 5.7% from $128bn in combined compensation and benefits by the same companies in 2009."

Open Letter To Linkedin

Dear Linkedin Management:

For a company looking to be a 'leader' your firm certainly is not acting like a leader in online business networking. So many customers pay for your services, yet you offer no way of a customer who pays to call the main number at (650)687-3600 and voice their concerns or even to check the status of their account and see what is going on if there is a problem occurring. After having on-going concerns and issues that nobody can even talk about, I am cancelling my business account. I have been using your service for over 5 years now and really liked the features, however it is disrespecting your customers, your source of revenue and profits when we are told we must wait 3-7 business days for getting simple answers about our accounts. I will forward this letter to anyone I know using your service so they can voice any concerns they have. Just because your site is the biggest at what it does, does not mean people will keep paying for substandard service. If you have a credit card and you had an issue with something on your account, would a 3-7 business day response by email be acceptable? No of course not! So why should the tens of thousands of people paying for your site services accept any less?

"Neil Fromer • Since posted this has gotten around 300 hits, if anyone is experiencing the same stuff, feel free to comment!

Jim Wells • Neil, I agree with you that if there were a similar service, I would have switched to it long ago. My biggest gripes are the "surprise" changes in formatting & content, and the lack of oversight of group managers to police the postings to weed out sales pitches and nonsense. Thanks for having the testicular fortitude to post your letter. Please let us know if you even get a response fro LI. Jim

Jim Jacobs • Is Plaxo any better. I offers the opportunity to merge calanders etc but I don't know about its group skills.

Neil • It is not an issue of what is better necessarily, there are easy things linkedin can do: open up a higher standard of service especially for customers who pay that can call linkedin when they have a problem not have to wait 4-7 BUSINESS DAYS for a simple response. They have made themselves into a facebook like service with no phone real person interaction to cut costs, but this discourages quality over quantity and revenue for them when people cancel in frustration.

Stuart Elson • Many things need to be fixed. The BB app is poor. When you "reply" to a question, LinkedIn defaults to adding the connection, in an unclear manner. It does not let you see who has viewed your profile in a clear and consistent manner, even if you pay for those features. Combining or removing dead accounts is a chore.
They need to get much better if they are truly a standard / public company.

Jim Wells • Right on Stuart. Perhaps the most astounding failure is the absence of a comment or suggestion option. LinkedIn has access to the expertise of millions of professionals -- yet is unwilling to allow them to help the company improve. What's up with that????

Neil • I have noticed the same recurring issues with their ipad apps as well. I hope to present these issues collectively to the management sometimes after getting thousands of views of the initial letter, people using the site and paying like my firm has for a while will be able to bring the issues up - I know people that work there but they are not in the management team, but not too hard to bring these things up later on"
